The Cutting Room Dozen #7

After a bit of a hiatus, here are twelve interesting things I’ve been reading, watching, and listening to in my very limited spare time recently.

#1 - Editors on Editing w/ Killers of the Flower Moon Editor: Thelma Schoonmaker

Martin Scorsese’s legendary collaborator discusses their long working relationship and the challenges of their latest project.

#2 - The Rough Cut: Meet the Editors Who Cut a Big Slice of “Beef”

The Emmy-nominated team behind Beef talk about how to manage the tensions and inter-personal relationship challenges of life in the cutting room.

#3 - Asking The Bear Editors How To Cut Montages The RIGHT Way

Montages, montages, and slowing things down to create tension.

#4 - David Fincher’s Editor Reveals The Key To Make ANY Edit Work

A second one from The Editing Podcast, this time with the Oscar-winning Kirk Baxter.

#5 - Editors on Editing w/ “The Bear” Editors: Joanna Naugle, Adam Epstein, Nia Imani and Megan Mancini

And if you can’t get enough of The Bear, here are four of the show’s Editors in conversation.

#6 - How The Art of Filmmaking Is Still Evolving

Although I’m an Editor, I’m keen to learn as much as possible about all of the crafts that we’re expected to dabble in during our work. Sound feels paramount amongst these, so that’s why there’s usually a video or two in these emails focused on sound. This month’s looks at how sound can be used during the development and pre-production phases of a project.

#7 - Meet Charles Little II, ACE

I recently interviewed two members of the editing team behind Welcome to Wrexham season 1, and they both spoke very highly of the talents of Charles Little. Here’s a chat he had with LAPPG.

#8 - ‘Extremely Demanding’: William Friedkin’s Editors Remember the Oscar-Winning Director

The Oscar-winning director of The French Connection and The Exorcist passed away recently. CineMontage spoke with Augie Hess and Darrin Navarro about their work with Friedkin.

#9 - The Complete Guide to Premiere Pro Proxies and Proxy Workflows

At some point you’re going to need to include proxies in your workflow. Here’s how to utilise them, and utilise them effectively, in Premiere.

#10 - Hollywood Post-Production with Adobe

A while back I stumbled across this series of 37 videos from Adobe Education which feature discussions with multiple Editors including luminaries as varied as Paul Rogers (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Inside the Edit’s Paddy Bird, Vashi Nedomansky, David Fincher’s post team, and the media teams at the Minnesota Vikings, Golden State Warriors and Atlanta Hawks.

#11 - 100 After Effect Tutorials

Many Editors and Assistant Editors use After Effects for various tasks. Motion Designer Will Taylor’s Twitter account is full of daily After Effects tutorials, including this thread of the ten most popular.

#12 - Workflow, Media Management, and the role of the Post House

Continuing with the theme of workflow and media management, here’s a roundtable discussion from Televisual on post-production and the role of the Post House.
