The Cutting Room Dozen #6

Hello and welcome to your monthly rundown of some of the most interesting editing, post-production, and filmmaking-related content online.

I've included a couple of links to articles and videos on AI over the past 2 or 3 months and they've proved particularly popular. That’s not especially surprising given all the discussion and fears around the explosive rise of AI in 2023, so I thought I’d collect together some of the things I've been reading and watching recently on its current and possible usage in Post.

#1 - Is Generative AI for Video Ready for Prime Time Production?

Noah Kadner and friends run a test project to find out how some of the current AI tools can be used in the real world.

#2 - A.I. In Post Production - Your Questions Answered! Tools, Adapting, Ethics, Evolution, and Impact

Michael Kammes takes a deep dive into A.I. for Post Production. He answers YOUR top 5 Artificial Intelligence questions so you’re prepared for the creative new world order with AI!

#3 - Is AI video about to creep out of the uncanny valley?

The potential to create footage during the edit is potentially one of the biggest game-changers when it comes to AI’s impact in Post. Mark Christiansen at Pro Video Coalition looks at Runway’s existing capabilities.

#4 - 3 Ways to Use Generative Fill For Video

Ready to dive into the future of video creation? This tutorial shares 3 methods to harness the power of Generative Fill in Photoshop for video editing.

#5 - Analysis: How the sector is making use of AI

Broadcast magazine looks at how, from automating time-consuming tasks to aiding creativity, the use of AI is spreading rapidly.

#6 - How A.I. is reshaping the way movies are made

Fortune magazine investigates how AI is impacting VFX work and beyond.

#7 - Art of the Cut - Oppenheimer

Jennifer Lame, ACE, and her team discuss the paradox of cutting a non-linear film in a linear way, and the joys of collaborating with director Christopher Nolan.

#8 - The Rough Cut: The Editors Behind Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer”

And here's the Oppenheimer edit team talking with frame.io's Matt Feury.

#9 - Why The Bear Gets In Your Head

Thomas Flight chats with the editors of The Bear to discuss how they ground their bold and stylish editing in character and story.

#10 - The Rough Cut: Getting Schooled by the Editors of “Abbott Elementary”

The Abbott Elementary editing team of Richie Edelson and Sarah Zeitlin discuss their work on the mockumentary sitcom and their backgrounds in unscripted.

#11 - Reviewing Your Demo Reels

Although reels aren’t all that useful for long-form editors, if you work in short-form, or you’re a shooter too, Mark Bone has a bunch of great advice on what to do and not do in your reel.

#12 - How Do You Edit a Show Like Welcome to Wrexham?

Finally, this is actually one of ours. Last weekend I had the chance to chat with Welcome to Wrexham Season 1 Editors Mohamed El Manasterly and Curtis McConnell about their Emmy-nominated work on the show.
